Someone finally flipped the switch labeled "winter." It was pretty cold all week, but I woke up this morning and saw sparse, white flakes falling and collecting on the sidewalk. By noon it was a whiteout. The streets are filled with a good two inches of snow, and it's not going to stop any time soon. It's not officially winter until the first blizzard, and the season changed today. It's good with me, I like the snow. When it falls and covers the entire landscape around you it feels like you're in a whole new place; and then it changes back again in the spring. With the snow comes pond hockey, sledding, and hilarious car crashes. It's probably a good thing I live in Minnesota, I'd be bored if I lived any where else.
Today is the kind of day I love. Nothing to do but sit and ride it out. The weather has the power to totally disrupt the normal routine of things. Things like that are funny. Where people's whole routine gets thrown out of whack, and it makes them so angry. People who are used to sailing home on 169 without any delay, are going to be upset that the lights at 494 are backed up two miles. The weather affects the local economy too. Today is bad for grocery stores. That's for sure. But great for pizza places. Beek's will be hopping tonight, and I will be in the middle of it. Hunkered down in the trenches. Pepperonis whizzing past myhead so fast it'd split ya in two. Soldiers bleeding pizza sauce out of wounds in their hands. Breathing in mustard gas from the other cooks. A nasty job on a dangerous night like tonight, but some people are born pizza heroes.
The white palate of my surroundings allows me to paint whole new worlds. But I can't put it off any longer. I have to lace up my boots, strap on my gators, and go exploring. This place that I live is perfect for some people. Strong people. Smart people. Flexible people. You have to be to get around on a day like today.
